About the Project

The Nigeria Rural Resilience Activity (RRA) is a Feed the Future Initiative funded by USAID, implemented by Mercy Corps in partnership with Save the Children International and the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC). The Rural Resilience Activity aims to facilitate and protect economic recovery and growth in vulnerable conflict-affected areas and sustainably move people out of chronic vulnerability and poverty via expanded opportunities.

Environmental and Economic Resource Center (EERC) through a partnership with Rural Resilience Activity with the overall aim of building Climate Resilience and Carbon Markets Opportunities in Northeast Nigeria seeks to increase income and improve the livelihood and resilience of households through market-led growth in Yola and Gombe State.

The Project aims to build the capacity of stakeholders and facilitate a policy development for sustainable investments in carbon markets and climate resilience activities among smallholder farmers in Northeast Nigeria. Also, the Project aims to build resilience to climate change by increasing climate change mitigation and adaptation practices that have the potential to not only increase productivity and conserve the environment but also increase productivity as well as create opportunities for carbon credits among the beneficiaries.

The project will further assist beneficiary households in the states to promote agro-forestry with the sole aim of improving food security, livelihoods, ecosystem functions, regeneration of degraded farmland and creating income from carbon markets. In addition, the project would assist beneficiaries to sustainably promoting effective utilization of agri-waste and carbon farming practices in order to reduce incidence of soil erosion, improve productivity and income of smallholder farmers as well as enhance sustainable utilization of resources, thereby reducing the impact of climate change.

About the Position

The Communication Officer is primarily responsible for providing high-quality digital marketing information necessary to support effective organizational operations for the project in Adamawa and Gombe states, Nigeria. S/he is expected to work under the direct supervision of the Program Manager- Agriculture and Environmental Management and Specific responsibilities include; designing infographics, newsletters, proposals, and any other documentary, and providing editing quality assurance. In addition, s/he will need to identify, support and promote the project’s goals, including message development, social media content creation, and media outreach, and provide appropriate training in digital marketing content and procedures for all staff. The Communication Officer will work towards contributing to Mercy Corp’s vision and mission of building Climate Resilience and Carbon Market Opportunities in the Northeast. The project is Fixed Term Contract: 12 Months Only

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Communication Officer will conduct media relations and involves with proactively pitching stories about key issues and the organization’s work, arranging interviews, and responding to requests in an accurate and timely manner during project activity in Yola and Gombe states.
  • Draft, coordinate clearance, and support the dissemination of communication and advocacy materials.
  • Provide support to Agriculture and Environmental Management Officer in planning and developing relevant information and communications products.
  • Oversee the design, and editorial content of the EERC website, ensuring that the website remains relevant and content is regularly updated.
  • Maintain an active presence on social media using photos and graphics to increase the visibility of EERC/Mercy Corp’s brand and achievement.
  • Prepare success stories, blogs, and newsletters and assist with content discovery and collection, including, photography, interviews, and research.
  • Proactively identify opportunities and liaise with national and international media and, in close liaison with the field office, plan, organize, and promote project events and initiatives, conference sessions, and panels and set up display exhibits at events.
  • Lead field duty travel to ensure photographs and video footage are obtained, as well as material for multi-media content showcasing work being undertaken by EERC in the field.
  • Support EERC staff and partners in getting relevant messages across to target audiences within and outside the organizations on project activities.
  • Understanding of and commitment to adhere to equity, diversity, gender, child safety, and staff health and wellbeing principles.
  • Frequently update EERC social media outlets (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc.) and ensure we disseminate information about our program on a weekly basis.
  • Any other tasks of a similar nature as requested by the Agriculture and Environmental Management Officer.

Required Qualification

Education: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in social science, Communication Studies, development studies, international relations, or any other related field is required.

Prior Work Experience: A minimum of three years of progressively professional experience working on a donor-funded program in Nigeria is required with experience working or collaborating with donors, governments, and/or international organizations is required.

Applicants who clearly meet the minimum Education and Prior work Experience requirements and basic eligibility requirements will be further evaluated based on scoring of the Evaluation Factors listed below. The highest-ranking applicants may be selected for an interview.

FACTOR 1: Knowledge and Competencies

Project management skills and experience related to multi-stakeholder projects for complex, international organizations and involving cross-functional teams within the context of developing economies are required. Exceptional planning and organizational skills, with an ability to meet deadlines, and manage multiple demands and competing priorities, while maintaining a high standard is required.

FACTOR 2: Skills and Abilities:

Ability to work independently and be able to take own initiative where required. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to adapt work plans flexibly and competency in the use of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams is preferred. Must be able to work effectively with mid-and senior-level public and private sector officials from the Government of Nigeria (GoN), Research Institutions, Private Sector, etc. Must be able to work effectively in a team environment and coordinate well with others.  Organizational skills and the ability to multitask and stay organized in a complex, frequently changing environment. Knowledge of office practices, procedures, and administrative systems with diplomacy and excellent interpersonal skills is required.

Proven skills in the development and implementation of communication/media products and tactics, ability to conceptualize ideas, and make innovative proposals related to communication.

FACTOR 3: Communication and Language Skills: Fluent English in oral and writing ability is required and the ability to speak Hausa is an added advantage.
